Sitting Bull, a legendary Hunkpapa Lakota war chief, was born in 1831 as Tȟatȟáŋka Íyotake, meaning "Bison Sitting on the Ground".

Path to Prominence
At the age of 14, Sitting Bull earned his name by touching a slain Crow with a coup stick. His father bestowed upon him this honor.
