Sophonisba Anguissola was born in Cremona, Lombardy, into a noble family.

As the eldest of seven children, six of whom were girls, she showed an early talent for painting. Her father, Amilcare Anguissola, provided her with an education that included art training.

Early Career

In her youth, Anguissola painted primarily religious works.
